ABOUT

Leslie Davis Preservation Framing

Leslie Davis and Jim DeYoung are the conservators and framers preferred by artists, collectors, families and museums in the Milwaukee metro area.

For the last eleven years, they have lent their unique blend of craftsmanship, artistry and restoration skills to the display of a wide variety of art old and new, posters, photos and prints, textiles, and three-dimensional objects.

When you bring your art to Preservation Framing, expect to spend some time in discussion of the condition of your object, where and how it will be displayed and the budget you have to work with. We can then devise a strategy that will allow you to enjoy your art or memorabilia without worrying about environmental damage.

We want to give you as much information as you need to make the best decision for yourself and your valued object. Jim, our conservation expert with 25 years of experience, will offer insight on condition and suggest options for repairs, cleaning and mounting.

We feel that all art has an ideal mate in mounting and frame style, so we strive to achieve that ideal. It is our goal to see you satisfied with your pieces, finely mounted and preserved, with a guaranty of quality.

    RESTORATION SERVICES

As art collectors and lovers of history, Jim and I have discovered valuable art finds in unlikely places: dusty old antique shops, attics, barns and boxes from estate sales. Once recovered, these pieces often benefit from some cleaning and restoration before they are framed for posterity and exhibited for pleasure.

You have probably had similar experiences. If you have unearthed a print, a photo, a watercolor, a faded oil or acrylic painting—or even an old sampler—we have the ability to improve its condition before you display or store it. Our specialty is art on paper, which has often suffered rough handling, cellophane tape, creases and tears.

Start by phoning us to make an appointment or to ask questions about our approach. Bring your art to our workshop. Not only would we love to hear your story about its acquisition and origin, we will be glad to inspect its condition and discuss a conservation strategy and options for repairs, if needed. We want to give you the confidence you need to make the right decision for your piece.

If you're a collector with a passion, a museum archivist charged with protecting our art heritage, or a family member looking after an estate, you are doubtless aware of the ravages the environment can wreak on objects of value.

Such investments must be preserved from light, humidity and air pollution with the latest preservation techniques. We would be glad to consult with you on the exhibition options or storage methods that will protect and defend your art while providing you peace of mind.

    Family Memorabilia

There is nothing more emotionally potent than the humble treasures passed from generation to generation. Their worth can never be stated in terms of the almighty dollar. Birth certificates, war documents, photos, passports and immigration papers—the dreams, hopes and hard labors of our ancestors are powerfully represented by the yellowing fragments of crumbling bits of paper.

Some of our most satisfying and poignant projects have been in family memorabilia, and we have great respect for the “lives” such mementoes have led up until the moment you bring them to our studio. While we can never restore such pieces to their original state, we can slow the progress of time.

In this respect, we tend to be cautious and minimalist in our approach. Like the lined face of a loved one, most family memorabilia has creases, foxing and spots which give it character and add to its story. We have the techniques that can keep these marks from advancing and increase the life span of the piece.

    Custom Framing

Leslie Davis Preservation Framing is the preferred framer for artists, collectors, museums and families because of our archival techniques--since our framing always has preservation in mind--but also because of our refined aesthetic and wide range of framing styles.

We feel that all art has an ideal mate in mounting and frame style, so we strive to achieve that ideal.

We do not use the same materials as the storefront or mall framers in your neighborhood. Our metal and wooden frames come from specialty suppliers who are the best in their industry.

Please call and bring your piece in for a framing recommendation. We will be glad to review with you the sample materials we have on hand and discuss the style and environment you plan for your art.

    Fire Recovery

God forbid you should ever have to experience the heartwrenching, gutwrenching losses brought by fire. But if it has happened, we would like to offer you a glimmer of hope in the form of our fire recovery services.

We do have the ability to clean smoke and soot damage from your art and examine your piece to see if the heat has caused any reaction with the material's substrates. Without going deeply into the technical details, we encourage you to contact us for a consultation and possible test for cleaning.

    CONTACT

We are in an exciting new location on Milwaukee’s South Side!

The Lincoln Warehouse was founded in 1924 and has been owned and operated by the same family for 80 years. It once housed the Huffy Bicycle Company, and is now home to a wide variety of small businesses in addition to remaining a warehouse.

Convenient to I-94 from the Becher Street exit, the Lincoln Warehouse rests on the corner of Becher and First Streets, immediately south of the Menomonee River. Off street parking is available, and we have use of loading docks when needed. You’ll find us on the 4th floor, accessible by freight elevator and staircase.

We regret we cannot give price quotes on our website. Because each project is unique, we ask for the chance to discuss your plans at length, but with no obligation on your part.

We look forward to hearing from you! (414) 298-9830 | 2018 South First Street, #404
